🇬🇧 Congo elections: Constitutional court outlines its preparedness

A regional delegation of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) is in the Republic of Congo ahead of this month’s presidential polls.

The Electoral Information and Evaluation Mission was received by the country’s constitutional court in Brazzaville on Monday. They were briefed on the status of preparations for the March 21 presidential elections. The authorities of the country’s also outlined their accomplishments in preparing for the upcoming polls and the role of the electoral dispute judge.

Auguste Iloki, who has served as president of the court since 2012, presented the ongoing and future projects aimed at ensuring the regularity of the presidential election. These include deploying electoral observers for the second time in history.

“We have appointed delegates as provided for in our law in Article 56, to monitor the election of President of the Republic in the departments, which will operate throughout the Republic,” stated the head of the court.

The constitutional court intends to deploy a total of 96 election observers including 84 delegates and 12 coordinators throughout the country to supervise the election. These observers join a list of national and foreign poll workers who will be present to ensure that the elections are transparent, free and fair. 

According to the United Nations, poll observation is a valuable tool for improving the quality of elections. Observers often make a dramatic difference in ensuring that elections move a country’s democratic process forward.

Meanwhile, Baudouin Hamuli Kabarhuza, Head of the CEEAC delegation said he was satisfied with the information provided to him. Kabarhuza and his team have been present in the country since last week.
